And Then I Got Trendy

Disclaimer: I know this is starting to resemble some sort of fashion blog given all my recent posts about style, but I promise you that just happens to be a coincidence and not a new, strategic direction for An Uncomplicated Life Blog.

Anyway, back to business: Since my sis was in town, we spent all day Saturday out and about around town, and ended up spending a good bit of time in the Bishop Arts District. You know what happens to be in the B-A-D? Tons of boutique shops. I bet you already know where I'm going with this... Yes, we spent a good chunk of the day shopping.

And I liked it. Cray cray, right?! Nearly as crayzay as me buying less classic, more trendy NON-J Crew clothes.

This day simply had to be documented. And it was documented at 9am on a Monday, thus the glasses and hair up situation (and sidenote: I'm loving being a red head! This color is sticking around for a while!)

Regardless, here's some of the goodies I scored:

The grey "sweater" (I use that term lightly because it's a Dallas-weight sweater, which is basically as light-weight as you can possibly get) was an instant favorite. It was a bit pricey-ier than I'd usually spend on an impulse, trendy buy, but hey... The hubs approved the purchase so it was game on!

Sweater: Scrapbook, leggings: Zulily, boots: Audrey Brooke; studded wristlet: Len Druskin (Minneapolis boutique), gold stud earrings: Tiffany & Co

Sweater dips down in the back for legging-booty-coverage

Next was this little gem. I LOVE Halloween, so clearly, this belongs on my Christmas tree, too. Add sparkles and this ornament was pretty much made for me. This has nothing to do with being trendy... Just some of the weird stuff I'm into. Keepin' ya guessing with this random post, right?! #whatjusthappened?

Finally, after putting down an infinity scarf, because get real - I rarely get the chance to wear those - I found this. I really liked the rust color. I don't have anything in my closet anywhere close to it, and I really liked the faux-leather details. I mean, I'm wearing faux-leather now?! Whoa. Has anyone checked to see if hell froze over, too?

Sweater: Janet Paris, jeans: J Crew, heels: BCBG, bangles and studded braclet: J Crew, gold stud earrings: Tiffany & Co

I'm still mostly into classic looks (cardigans, jeans and t-shirts, simple gold jewelry) but it is fun to have a few trendy pieces to spice up my look this fall and into the winter. I've found that you're either a classics person or a trendy person, and we rarely cross into each others' camps. Although we should far more often, yeah?

Do you tend to gravitate towards classics or trendy?

    1. I saw it on the hanger, didn't even try it on, gave the hubby my big puppy dog eye look, and bought it. All that happened in about a minute and a half!

  3. I tend to gravitate towards classic looks, but recently I've been trying to spin my "classic" pieces into trendy outfits by adding little odds and ends. Also... I bought faux leather leggings the other day, and I think I'm in love. It's good to get out of our comfort zones from time to time.
    Also--you are adorable!

    1. Oh girl, I am STRUGGLING to find some faux leather leggings that are remotely long enough! Express has them with a 30" inseam. That will reach my calf. I need 34" to hit the top of my ankle, 36" is much better... Where'd you find yours?!

    2. I got mine at Kohl's! They had petite, so I bet they have tall, too! The Lauren Conrad collection (PLUS they were on SUPER sale!)

    3. Ha! You would THINK if they carry petite, they'd have tall too, but oh no no! That's not how it works at all. Only a select few retailers carry tall sizes :( I'm totally going to look into it, though!

  5. I am in the same lane with the classic style. Color scares me though. Print scares me too. Definitely nothing with colored print. Unless we're talking beach cover ups&bathing suits then anything goes but even still then I'm usually in my black strapless j crew top with my black bottoms. Here lately I've been wearing a colored suit top with black bottoms. I think I'm on the brink of catching the trending up my wardrobe bug (is that even a real phrase? I know nothing John Snow). You've given me some good inspiration! I might also try to take a cue from Jaelan and turn my classic stuff into something more trendy with the little odds and ends idea. Also- I'm loving your fashion posts! I really dig the mirror selfie fashion pics too! Sometimes the professional looking fashion photo posts overwhelm me. Thanks for making me feel like I can venture out of my classic style without having to go all out. Idk if I'm ready for all that! haha! Loved this post! Great picks! x

    1. Wow, a big THANK YOU! Outside of bright and obnoxious workout clothes, I stick to the basics, pattern-less and classic. Who knows why I love adventurous workout wear and boring clothes, right? I'm right there with you!

And thanks with the pic love! Truth be told, I don't have anyone to take fancy "professional-looking" photos of me, unless I did all my photography on the weekends. That's not happening. So, I work with what I've got :)

  6. Can we talk about how much I am loving your new color.....rocking that topknot and totally digging that red lip. Sometimes I'll just swipe on that YSL red lip stain and quick mascara swipe and call it a day. That sweater is perfect. It's lightweight and the booty coverage with leggings is essential. I like the faux detail on that burgundy shirt. I am rocking my burgundy skinny leggings today....try to will Fall to come to FL.....it's not working yet.

    1. That's pretty much what I did for these photos! Except minus the mascara - I was like, meh, you won't be able to tell with the glasses anyway :) Booty coverage is SO essential because believe me... You sit down, those leggings become see-through real quick! I don't care how thick they are.

    1. Thank you Natalie! Zulily is so hit or miss and their shipping takes FOREVER (I think it took me over a month to get these leggings) but when it's 70% off, you really can't complain!

  10. ooo I love the glasses and red lipstick. You're totally pulling it off and look beautiful! I like those type of trendy pieces that are interesting and different but not over the top. It's not like you're wearing a Genie pants or anything too crazy. I'm all for accent leather pieces by the way and that studded cuff....amazing.

    1. Hahaha! Genie pants?! Do people wear those? I'm more out of touch than I thought. And thank you! I can't do the super crazy stuff either... Obviously. I envy those who can, though!
