Five Fitness Facts

Last week I decided to be bad. Real bad.

I skipped the gym. I peaced out on the yoga studio. And I sure as heck didn't hit up any barre classes.

Here's the thing though: I learned some things about exercise. Yes, by NOT exercising. I'm going to share with you the five key takeaways I gathered from my bizarre week of not working out.

Five Effects of Not Working Out {From a Workout Junkie}

1) Energy levels disappear. I had NO energy. None. It seems counter-intuitive, but dang if working out doesn't give you that extra boost no amount of caffeine will!

2) Moods get real funky, real fast. Now granted, it has been raining and snowing in Dallas nonstop, which is enough to make any of us Southerners cry, but I was not a pleasant person to be around. Even I didn't want to hang out with me! Sorry friends and fam.

3) Hard work disappears quickly. I was bloated after about my third day of not doing much, and after my first class back? Holy moly, I could barely get out of bed the next day!

4) Physical exercise helps to stimulate your mind. Maybe it's the blood flow, or maybe it's chatting with my friends after a class that gets me thinking, but I felt like I lost IQ points in my "off" week.

5) Motivation builds upon positive results. After my week off, I was more or less like, "Meh. Maybe I'll only go for a two mile run" upon my first day back. Whereas when I'm consistent, I think, "Pssshhh! Go for another five minutes." When you start to feel good, you get an extra boost of motivation to carry you through a workout, or carry you on to the next one.

Have you ever ditched your workouts for some free time? Did you notice a difference? Tell me how it effected you!

    Yeah. I skip workouts. I said it.
    I do feel better when I am active. Some days, I'm just so active at work it's hard to make myself "work out"... so I don't. Ha.

  3. Yes to all of it! I am with you girl! I totally lose my motivation when I don't workout. All great points!

  4. It's such a slippery slope right? When you don't work out then you don't feel good and then you lose the motivation to work out because you don't feel good. Sometimes it really is a struggle to just get there but once it's over you know it was worth it! True story. I have been teaching so much I haven't been able to take....I took class on Wednesday and literally felt like I was going to pass out.....I had so much lactic acid build up in my thighs I thought I was going to die. Definitely cannot take that much time off again ever!

  5. Between traveling and this snowy/rainy weather, I've been skipping my extra-long weekend walks and I miss them. I definitely notice a mood shift anytime I'm out of my routine. And yoga? I've been slipping. I need to get back to a class for a little while instead of doing it on my own. Perhaps a new yoga outfit will motivate me? *Excuse to shop* =)

  8. I've been out of the gym for about a month now and I am sooo feeling it. I didn't realize what a boost exercising is for my mind and body. I feel so out of shape (mentally & physically) and I know it is going to be difficult to get back in the groove again. As I get older I realize more and more how important it is to keep moving.

  9. love this! i know that when i am in a routine, working out is vital to my sanity, and most importantly - my energy and sleep. i sleep like a mess, not well at all, if i'm not exercising and my energy is pathetic. exercise really helps.

  10. I totally agree with the fact that hard work disappears quickly! I was doing so well before the holidays, and even though I have worked out I haven't been going at it as hard and there's a huge difference... good motivation though!

One of the audience used the term "El trampolin" (Spanish for diving board) after observing how the rebound tumbler worked.
