Essential Oils for Aches and Pains

Aches and pains. We all have them. If you're athletic, a gym rat, runner or yoga enthusiast like me, you get them regularly! If you're pregnant, they've become your way of life. So how can you alleviate these obnoxious aches and pains without chemical medication (aka Tylenol, etc)? With essential oils! Sound crazy? I thought so too. Until I started to use essential oils for my own bodily aches and pains.

And they worked.

How to use essential oils to ease bodily aches and pains #essentialoils

I'm both pregnant and a fitness-fanatic, so sore muscles are no stranger to me. Pre-pregnancy, if a particular muscle/joint was really bothering me, I'd take an Ibuprofen to take away the pain and to reduce any joint swelling. Turns out, the chemical compounds in some pain medication cause birth defects and are not approved for pregnant women. I was left without a back up!

When I told you all I was embarking with Young Living, I'm sure I got a few eye rolls, especially from those who are fond of Western medicine. I too thought, "Hey, these will be cool for aromatherapy and making my house smell good. But actual physical and health benefits? Meh."

My kit arrived with an oil blend called Panaway. I'd never heard of it. It's a rich, fresh mix of wintergreen, helichrysum, clove and peppermint. I looked up how to use it in some of my reading materials and found that it was great for after exercise, sore lower backs, headaches and minor tension. It can be applied "neat", meaning directly to your skin, or combined with a carrier oil such as coconut, olive or grapeseed oils.

Panaway starts of very wintergreen-peppermint smelling; then finishes with the wonderful clove scent. It doesn't burn the skin with a strong "cooling" feeling. There's a very slight, refreshing tingle that lasts for about 20 minutes when applied neat to the skin. Diluting the essential oil with a carrier will actually prolong this tingle, as the essential oil will evaporate more slowly.

One particular day my lower back was killing me. Pregnancy makes you over arch your back to compensate for the weight you're carrying in the front, and spending all day like that does a number on your muscles! Hubs was traveling and I had no one to rub my soreness out. So I grabbed my Panaway from my kit, put a few drops in my hands and applied it directly to my lower back. Then went to the couch to work on a blog post.

Five minutes later, I noticed my back no longer hurt. I'm not kidding - the pain was entirely gone! "That's funny. Changing positions from my desk to the couch must have helped!" I thought. Several days later, my pregnancy back pain was back so I used Panaway. Again, within about five minutes (and very little rubbing since I was applying the oil to my own lower back) the pain was gone.

Hubs finally came home and offered me a back rub (he offers every night he's home. Best pregnancy-partner ever.) I said sure! But I grabbed my oil and asked him to apply it while he rubbed. "This smells good!" He said, and proceeded to rub my lower back with Panaway. Yet again, any back pain I had earlier that day was gone. Not just lessened, not slightly better - gone.

If you're suffering from a headache or tension, try rubbing a bit on your temples, behind your ears and neck. If you're having soreness or stiffness in a particular muscle, put a few drops in your palms, rub together and apply to the muscle for relief. If you'd prefer a longer massage, dilute the Panaway blend with a carrier oil. Check out these 10 ways to use Panaway essential oil for other aches and pains, too!

I'm not a doctor, I can't diagnose/treat your medical conditions and I'm not recommending you stop any medical treatment and replace it with Panaway. However, if you find yourself occasionally suffering from bodily aches and pains and want a holistic way to alleviate that pain, try Panaway! This essential oil has done wonders for my bodily aches and pains during a time I simply can't indulge in Western medicine (pregnancy)!

  1. Okay so much lower back is killing me. Either I tweaked it with teaching or you know like sneezed wrong. I think I need some of this especially if your hubby didn't turn his nose up to the smell.....we all know how sensitive they are to our witch potions ;-)

  2. I'm loling at Amanda's comment above hahah...witch potions. I've heard nothing but good things about essential oils and I'm thinking more and more that I should get on this train. You had me at headache--I get them kinda frequently (especially starting a new school year), and hate taking headache medicine. You may have started me as a convert....

  3. I am growing increasingly interested in essential oils. My mom has been into them for years and years. You may have to give me a 411 when I visit later this week.

  4. I legit need this one today - I did a weight training class on Monday and my triceps are so sore today I can't even lift my arms :( xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  5. Panaway is for sure one of my faves. And I love the smell. Such a great oil.

  6. I've been wanting to try essential oils, but they're so overwhelming! This helps a lot =)

  7. This sounds awesome, especially since I'm always getting sore from my gym workouts. Is there anything essential oils can't do?!

  8. I use EO for lots of things. I even use them for my thyroid. Lavender is a must in our house!
