And they worked.
I'm both pregnant and a fitness-fanatic, so sore muscles are no stranger to me. Pre-pregnancy, if a particular muscle/joint was really bothering me, I'd take an Ibuprofen to take away the pain and to reduce any joint swelling. Turns out, the chemical compounds in some pain medication cause birth defects and are not approved for pregnant women. I was left without a back up!
When I told you all I was embarking with Young Living, I'm sure I got a few eye rolls, especially from those who are fond of Western medicine. I too thought, "Hey, these will be cool for aromatherapy and making my house smell good. But actual physical and health benefits? Meh."
My kit arrived with an oil blend called Panaway. I'd never heard of it. It's a rich, fresh mix of wintergreen, helichrysum, clove and peppermint. I looked up how to use it in some of my reading materials and found that it was great for after exercise, sore lower backs, headaches and minor tension. It can be applied "neat", meaning directly to your skin, or combined with a carrier oil such as coconut, olive or grapeseed oils.
Panaway starts of very wintergreen-peppermint smelling; then finishes with the wonderful clove scent. It doesn't burn the skin with a strong "cooling" feeling. There's a very slight, refreshing tingle that lasts for about 20 minutes when applied neat to the skin. Diluting the essential oil with a carrier will actually prolong this tingle, as the essential oil will evaporate more slowly.
Five minutes later, I noticed my back no longer hurt. I'm not kidding - the pain was entirely gone! "That's funny. Changing positions from my desk to the couch must have helped!" I thought. Several days later, my pregnancy back pain was back so I used Panaway. Again, within about five minutes (and very little rubbing since I was applying the oil to my own lower back) the pain was gone.
Hubs finally came home and offered me a back rub (he offers every night he's home. Best pregnancy-partner ever.) I said sure! But I grabbed my oil and asked him to apply it while he rubbed. "This smells good!" He said, and proceeded to rub my lower back with Panaway. Yet again, any back pain I had earlier that day was gone. Not just lessened, not slightly better - gone.
If you're suffering from a headache or tension, try rubbing a bit on your temples, behind your ears and neck. If you're having soreness or stiffness in a particular muscle, put a few drops in your palms, rub together and apply to the muscle for relief. If you'd prefer a longer massage, dilute the Panaway blend with a carrier oil. Check out these 10 ways to use Panaway essential oil for other aches and pains, too!
I'm not a doctor, I can't diagnose/treat your medical conditions and I'm not recommending you stop any medical treatment and replace it with Panaway. However, if you find yourself occasionally suffering from bodily aches and pains and want a holistic way to alleviate that pain, try Panaway! This essential oil has done wonders for my bodily aches and pains during a time I simply can't indulge in Western medicine (pregnancy)!
