WANTED: Advice and Opinions!

Well, it is official: I have entered the proverbial "nesting phase" of pregnancy. All I want to do is straighten up and organize baby purchases and read baby books. All. I. Want. To. Do.

So, with that in mind, I'm looking to you, dear readers!

What I want to know is, what baby books would you recommend? Specifically, books that focus on newborns and the first year. Don't hold back, what are your favorites?! Go ahead and comment, email, or reply via social media with your personal recommendations.

Since I only have a few weeks left, I don't really need any additional books on pregnancy. I've read the ever popular What to Expect                " (fill in the blank - "When You're Expecting" "In the First Year" etc.)  Up next in the que is this little gem:

My manicure matching the book was unintentional, I swear!

Beyond that, I've got a subscription to Fit Pregnancy Magazine, which has a few parenting articles per issue, but that's about it. So clearly, I'm in need of bolstering my parental reading! I've heard both good and bad reviews of Baby Wise. My midwives say it's good to implement the strict schedule after the "fourth trimester" (aka, when baby is at least three months old) because a newborn simply needs constant attention and feedings. Any readers have any thoughts on that book in particular?

Any and all good reads are greatly appreciated! I'm only sleeping about four hours a night, so I have a lotttttttttttt of time to get caught up on best practices in the baby realm.

I look forward to hearing your recommendations!

  1. I am using Healthy Sleep Habits: Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth. I like that it is only about 10-15 pages per sleep stage and talks about scheduling and sleep routine development and setbacks in a matter of fact fashion. For me the most stressful things about becoming a parent was figuring out feeding and sleeping, I got lucky with a really good eater and sleeper, but this book helped me know when and how to adjust and set up a good sleep pattern.

    1. Thanks Katie! I hear that you can get a pattern established, feel really good about it and BAM. Baby decides that pattern doesn't work anymore, and you're back to ground zero AND stressed about it. I like how this book addresses setbacks. Thanks so much for the rec!

  2. I used Babywise and liked the overall gist. We didn't follow it to the letter but I was pretty religious about teaching Zoe to stay awake after a feeding (i.e., not teaching her to need to eat to fall asleep). I think it's worth a read but I would also recommend to adjust it to your baby's rhythms.

    1. What you're saying is pretty much what our midwives have suggested - that it's got some great tips but adapt them to suit the needs of your family. Thanks Gabe! I was pretty sure I was going to pick this one up, but now it's on my list of things to purchase today :)

  5. Say no. The better you get at declining requests that aren't in your child's best interests, the less you'll have to do it. You can say no once in the grocery when your youngster requests an ice cream carton, or you can say no every night after the carton is in your freezer at home. Prepare yourself for sick days. So you don't have to hurry to the store in the middle of the night when your child is vomiting, stock up on rehydration liquids like Pedialyte, Gatorade, or Vitamin Water. Understand your child. Each youngster has a unique set of abilities and problems. Make an effort to personalize your response to the child in front of you. Get tower defense games at Games.lol now!
