The Funny Thing About Parenting and Blogging

Remember when I shared with y'all about how Henry seemed to be lagging behind the development curve in some areas?

Well, my kiddo must have baby-super powers with the ability to pull up the internet and read his mommy's blog. And then feel super bashful about what she wrote. Because the day after that post published, Henry decided he'd start to feed himself.

Self feeding baby! You just do you, Henry. Just do you.

I had been coaching him for months and months how to take the piece of food he picked up and bring it to his mouth instead of smashing it and throwing it on the floor. Months and months. So once again on a Tuesday afternoon, lil' H and I found ourselves at the table for a snack. I was likely answering blog emails or futzing on my phone, one eye on my kid and one eye on what I'm trying to accomplish.

Then, the day after that post went live I tell you, Henry looked at me while he fed himself a piece of cheese. I stopped what I was doing so I could clap, smile and praise him. And he did it again. And again. And with other kinds of foods, too!

I won't bore you with further details or share the obscene amount of video and photos I took of this seemingly non-monumentous event. But I did laugh and find it incredibly ironic that the day Henry decided it was time to feed himself was the day after I told the world he couldn't/wouldn't do it.

Isn't that just like a baby?!

They do things on their own timeline, that's for sure.

  1. I literally want to squeeze him right now in that picture!!!! I am so happy girl that he is feeding himself now and he sits up like a champ while doing it! So you're telling me I should write a blog post about how a certain someone doesn't like putting away his laundry and I just tripped over the drying hanging rack then........perhaps post it on his FB wall? ;-) all jokes I tell you. All on their own timeline girl that is for sure! xoxoxo

  8. This is pretty funny! I've been a nanny forever and it's very interesting to see how and when kids reach milestones. No two kids are alike!

  9. i never compared kayla to other kids; i figured she'd do things when she's ready. kayla never held her own bottle even though i tried and we kind of had a battle of wits...i'd hold it, then put her hand on it and take my hand away, she'd let her hand fall, the bottle would start falling and i wouldn't catch it and then it would fall to the floor....we'd stare at each other until one of us cracked (she would cry or i would pick it up). i just figured her to be a lazy baby! there were things babies were doing that kayla wasn't and things that she was doing other babies weren't so that showed me that all babies learn at different rates. in the end, as long as they're happy and healthy, that's all that matters.

my nephew didn't start talking until he was 5! prior to that, he grunted a lot and threw major tantrums. then when he was 5, he was a totally different boy - talked non-stop and stopped freaking out. kids are weird!!

  10. His face seriously looks like, "What Mom, I've been doing this forever, duh." I'm picturing you doing a slow clap as you walk toward him, but I'm sure that's not how it went down. Probably a bit more enthusiasm and all. :)
